Charlene Barr: Inspired to launch a second career as a PSW in the community

In 1999, Charlene Barr started working at The Grove in the kitchen. When her mother decided to become a PSW later in life, Charlene was inspired to also go to college to start her second career as a PSW.

After graduating in 2016, she was hired to work as a PSW with Arnprior Regional Health’s Assisted Living Program and has been there ever since.

“I enjoy working in the community because I’m able to give one-on-one attention to each client,” shared Charlene. “Every shift is different, and I appreciate that variety.”

Charlene and her colleagues help seniors who live independently by providing them with many services including personal care, cooking, cleaning, and social support. With the pandemic, clients’ close contacts have been limited to one dedicated caregiver for the support they need.

“Especially during COVID, clients are so grateful to see you when you come through the door,” said Charlene.

The Assisted Living Program’s goal is to allow each client to stay at home safely for as long as possible.

“I hope I bring cheer, laughter and comfort to each client every day.”
