Arnprior Regional Health celebrates reduction in annual emissions

April 21, 2022 – On Earth Day, the Arnprior Regional Health Team is celebrating its green wins thanks to significant infrastructure investments that have reduced annual emissions by 157 tonnes of carbon dioxide (equivalent to 66,883 liters of gas consumed) and resulted in annual savings of $183,588.

In 2015-16, The ARH Facilities Team developed a five-year strategic facility renewal plan to identify and address aspects of the buildings’ systems that were in major decline. Through a competitive procurement process, Trane was selected as the redevelopment partner, leading to significant upgrades at the Hospital and new Grove Nursing Home.

“Our organization has made considerable investments in green technologies and infrastructure upgrades that have allowed our facilities to run more energy efficiently and effectively—making a difference to our carbon footprint and the comfort of our patients, residents and staff,” said Leah Levesque, President and CEO, ARH. “This green investment is a great win for ARH that will best serve our community for years to come.”

In response to critical aging Hospital infrastructure and to reduce emissions, upgrades have been made over multiple years. This includes:

  • New high efficiency heating plant
  • LED lighting installed
  • Air handing units replaced, and air volumes increased
  • Low flow water fixtures installed
  • Doors, windows and cracks sealed
  • New building automation system
  • New domestic hot water system
  • New humidification system
  • All windows replaced
  • Cooling added to selected in-patient room (1st floor central)

As part of the construction of the new Grove, investments were made to increase the building’s performance and safety, enhance residents’ comfort, and help reduce emissions. This includes:

  • Central air conditioning added to resident areas
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning design upgraded to provide increased air flow and filtration
  • Building automation system upgrades
  • Trane’s Intelligent Services; real-time views of energy and building performance

The Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES) awarded ARH with the 2021 Wayne McLellan Award of Excellence in Healthcare Facilities Management for the Hospital’s energy management transformation and its ongoing annual energy savings.

ARH and Trane are celebrating Earth Day with staff activities, education, and events.
