This expansion enhances local access to early detection and screening services for lung cancer, helping people at higher risk receive timely testing closer to home. By offering this service at ARH, patients and families in the region will benefit from improved convenience, continuity of care, and access to specialized screening supports.

The Ontario Lung Screening Program is a province-wide, organized screening program for people at high risk of developing lung cancer. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in Ontario, largely because it is often diagnosed at a later stage. Screening can help detect lung cancer earlier, when treatment is more likely to be effective.

Cancer screening is testing done on people who may be at risk of cancer but have no symptoms and generally feel well. People may qualify for lung cancer screening if they:

• are between 55 and 80 years old
• have smoked cigarettes daily for at least 20 years (not necessarily consecutively), and
• have Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage

Healthcare providers can refer patients to the program by completing the OLSP referral form and faxing it to 613-728-6333. Individuals may also contact the OLSP Champlain location directly at 1-844-394-1124 or 613-761-4535 (option 1) to have their age and smoking history assessed.
