Mammography Unit achieves accreditation for delivering highest quality care

December 9, 2019 – The Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) Mammography Unit has been re-accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists for meeting Cancer Care Ontario standards that confirm its delivery of high-quality mammography services to patients.

The accreditation is for a maximum three-year period. The Mammography Unit received accreditation based on its processes, quality of care, and its radiologists and technologists meeting the evaluation criteria.

“We are fortunate to be able to provide the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) at ARH,” said Susan Leach, Vice President, Patient and Resident Services and Chief Nursing Executive, ARH. “Mammography as a screening tool can detect breast cancer tumours when they are small, less likely to have spread and more likely to be treated successfully. The studies show that regular mammograms lower the risk of dying from breast cancer in women ages 50 to 74.  At ARH, our team provides high quality services, meeting the standards set out by the OBSP and the needs of our local community.”

ARH provides local community members with digital mammography – the best practice in screening – thanks to the generosity of donor support. Annually, ARH performs 2,750 mammograms and the team works with referral partners in Ottawa and Pembroke to ensure patients are booked for a timely follow-up biopsy, if needed.

“Our team is committed to providing every patient with the highest quality of life-saving screening and diagnostic care, right here in their community without the stress of travelling to another city,” said Vicki Hallas, Manager, Diagnostic Services.

Because of programs like ARH’s and treatment advancements, there has been a 44% decrease in breast cancer deaths since 1988.
