Mammography Unit accredited for meeting the highest standards

December 15, 2022 – The Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) Mammography Unit has been re-accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) for meeting the standards for high-quality mammography services.

(L to R): Chris Perneel, Ward Clerk, Kristy Cardiff, Mammography Technologist, Vicki Hallas, Manager of Diagnostic Services, and Raeline McGrath, VP of Patient Care and Chief Nurse Executive.

The CAR accreditation process occurs every three years. It included a review of the ARH Mammography Unit’s technical images and clinical mammograms, which met all the evaluation criteria and other standards.

“Our Mammography Team has done a remarkable job managing the pressures of the pandemic to ensure our patients have timely access to the highest quality screening and diagnostic mammograms,” said Raeline McGrath, VP, Patient Care, and Chief Nurse Executive, ARH. “Congratulations to our Mammography Team for a successful accreditation that reflects their commitment to their patients and the delivery of exemplary care.”

According to the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), approximately 25 per cent of all new cancer cases in women in 2022 were breast cancer. CCS also reports that the breast cancer death rate peaked in 1986 and has been declining since, which likely reflects the impact of screening and improvements in treatment for breast cancer.

“Timely screening and diagnostic mammography are key to prevention and early diagnosis and treatment,” Vicki Hallas, Manager, Diagnostic Services, ARH. “Our Mammography Team takes great pride in providing the community with the highest standard of life-saving breast screening and diagnostics without the inconvenience and stress of travelling out of town to another centre,”

The ARH Mammography Unit provides services to patients through its Ontario Breast Screening Program and the Diagnostic Mammography Program. In total, the team performs approximately 3,700 mammograms annually.
