Jean Riopelle considers herself lucky to have spent the past 12 years working at ARH in the Health Records Department.
“I came to ARH for a full-time position and when I got here, I was hooked,” said Jean, who previously worked part-time at other hospitals in the region in transcription and as a health records clerk. “We’re so lucky – we work well together, and we have fun together. When there’s a crunch in Health Records, people jump in and do their share.”
Never a typical day
Jean enjoys the smaller hospital environment –everybody knows one another, they pitch in when needed and team members are accountable to one another.
She also notes that each day on the job continues to be interesting.
“There’s not a typical day,” remarks Jean, who took the Medical Terminology course and Health Information Management course before coming to ARH. “We each have our designated jobs but there are always the little extras that often need to be done right away such as responding to patient or physician offices’ requests. It’s always changing.”
HART Award recipient
In 2013, Jean was formally recognized when she received the HART Award, which is given to employees who demonstrate ARH’s values: honesty, accountability, respect, and teamwork.
“Jean models our values of HART and demonstrates high commitment to making things better for her team and the organization as a whole,” said Andrea McClymont, Manager, Health Information Services and Decision Support and Chief Privacy Officer, ARH. “She steps up to every challenge and has been instrumental in completing several projects with success over the past few years including Health Information Management superuser for Meditech, improving our Continuing Care Reporting System submission process, and Connecting Ontario Provincial Electronic Health Record.”
Jean did not expect the honour and remembers the high-calibre nominees who were each deserving of the award.
“I was shocked when my name was called,” said Jean. “I’m always behind the scenes and it’s my job to help when someone calls with a problem to figure it out.”
From behind the scenes, Jean continues to be an excellent team member.
“Her sense of humour and passion for work is motivation for us all,” said Andrea. “She’s a highly valued member of our team and our organization.”
