Gary Colombe: A passion for cooking and helping seniors

Gary Colombe’s career did not begin in health care, but he considers himself lucky that his institutional cooking experience led him to work at the Grove Nursing Home.

After retiring from 30 years as a cook with the Canadian Armed Forces, Gary eventually found himself relocating from Newfoundland to the Ottawa Valley to help with his wife’s aging parents.

“I’ve always enjoyed taking care of people and I was lucky enough to get a job at a retirement home in Newfoundland and it really spurred my interest in helping seniors,” said Gary, who started working as the Grove’s cook in December 2019.

Gary has made a strong connection with the residents and acknowledges how that part of his role became even more important during the COVID-19 shutdown.

“Gary has been instrumental in strengthening team work to the core during these challenging times at the Grove,” said Christina Carnegie, Manager, Food Services. ARH. “Gary has an excellent work ethic and inspires others by demonstrating how important it is to do whatever is necessary to complete tasks and provide a positive environment for the residents and his colleagues. Not only does he step up to the plate accepting multiple shifts including double shifts, he does whatever it takes to get the work done and all while keeping a smile on everyone’s face with his light-hearted humour.”

Gary especially enjoys doing anything he can to brighten the residents’ day, and has a running list of their favourite foods that includes hot dogs, loaded potatoes and a new love for fish.

“They are so appreciative of anything you do for them – it’s just amazing,” said Gary.

He also reflects on how tight-knit and welcoming the Grove community has been.

“Everybody who works here treats everyone like its their own family. That’s what I like about it the most – it’s so special.”
