A NuStep in the Right Direction: How a New Machine is Helping Grove Residents Stay Active and Independent
June 5, 2025 – When you step into the Physiotherapy Room at The Grove, you’ll likely spot a resident seated on a sleek recumbent cross trainer, moving steadily through a full-body, low-impact workout. It might look simple, but the NuStep machine helps residents build strength, boost circulation, and stay active, all while staying safe.
Take Lisa, for example – a Grove resident who uses the NuStep for 15 minutes every day. “I feel tired afterward, but a good tired,” she says with a grin. “I feel safe when I’m using it. I’ve noticed a difference in myself.”

The NuStep is specially designed for seniors and those with mobility challenges. Its low step-through design makes it incredibly easy to get on and off, and its adjustable settings – from resistance to seat position – allow each resident to go at their own pace. “It improves circulation without adding strain,” explains Amir, a physiotherapy assistant at The Grove. “If someone needs a break, they can stop every couple of minutes. It’s all about moving safely and comfortably.”
Already, ten residents are using the NuStep regularly, and the number is growing as more are evaluated. The goal is to have about half the caseload benefit from it.
The idea to bring in the NuStep was sparked during a Friends and Family Council meeting. Lisa Kyte, Manager of Allied Health Services, gave up update from the physiotherapy team as part an ongoing effort to help families connect with the care happening behind the scenes. She also mentioned the NuStep machine she was hoping to one day bring to the home.
One of the meeting attendees was Marjorie Kelly, The Grove’s Volunteer Coordinator. Marjorie was impressed with the benefits of the NuStep and brought a proposal forward to the Auxiliary.
“I am so glad we have this now for the residents – it will make such a difference!” says Marjorie.

Shortly after, Lisa Kyte received an email that made her day: the Auxiliary had decided to fund the entire purchase.
“I was thrilled,” Lisa Kyte says. “It’s a fantastic addition for our residents, and we’re already seeing the impact.”
NuStep machines offer a gentle but effective way to build cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles used in daily tasks, and improve balance, all from a seated position. By keeping movement safe, accessible, and personalized, the NuStep empowers residents to stay mobile, independent, and engaged in life at The Grove.
The team is incredibly grateful to the Auxiliary for their generous support, and to every staff member and volunteer who helps create opportunities like this for residents to thrive.
