Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a primary care, autonomous, client-focused health profession dedicated to improving quality of life by:

  • Promoting optimal mobility, physical activity and overall health and wellness:
  • Preventing disease, injury and disability;
  • Managing acute and chronic conditions, activity limitations, and participation restrictions;
  • Improving and maintaining optimal functional independence and  physical performance;
  • Rehabilitating injury and the effects of disease or disability with therapeutic exercise programs and other interventions;
  • Educating and planning maintenance and support programs to prevent re-occurrence, re-injury or functional decline.

At ARH, the physiotherapy department is staffed by 1 full-time and 2 part-time physiotherapists as well as 1 full-time physiotherapy assistant.

On the inpatient unit, the physiotherapist provides assessment, treatment, education and consultation to patients with problems related to cardiorespiratory, medical, neurological, oncological and orthopedic conditions. The goal is to achieve optimal recovery of function, movement, mobility and to maximize a patient’s quality of life. To achieve these goals, we work to evaluate and restore strength, range of motion, endurance, balance, mobility, respiratory function, and physical abilities affected by injury, disease or disability.

In the outpatient department, we currently offer services to clients meeting the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care criteria.

  • Aged 65 years or older
  • Aged 19 years or younger
  • Recently discharged as an inpatient of a hospital and in need of ongoing therapy services that are directly connected to the condition, illness or injury for which the patient was admitted to hospital (i.e. Total knee replacement, Total hip arthroplasty)
  • Those who are in receipt of benefits from the Ontario Disability Support Program or the Ontario Works Program

We do not see clients who sustained injuries at work (WSIB) or as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Our department is located on the second floor of the hospital in suite 214. Our hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8-4pm and we can be reached at 613-623-3166 ext. 204.
