Strategic Planning

The Ontario Telemedicine Network is a rapidly expanding, not-for-profit organization that’s improving access to medical treatment, especially for patients living in rural areas. Each day, 12 patients in the Champlain region use telemedicine.

For example, a patient may go to their community hospital in Arnprior to consult with a skin, heart, or diabetes specialist in Ottawa through videoconferencing. A total of 30 providers, networks, and educational institutions are now hooked up in the Champlain region. Telemedicine is important to the Champlain LHIN, as it helps address the strategic direction of improving access to care closer to home.

In July 2014, the telehealth team along with Dr. Jason Sack announced a new clinic offered called Store Forward. The Store forward program provides more access to Dr. Sack along with 5 other Dermatologists in the area: Dr. Diane Quintal; Dr. JP Des Groseilliers; Dr. Steven Glassman; Dr. James Walker; and Dr. Irene Lara Carrales (Pediatric Dermatologist).

How does it work? Ontario Telehealth Network (OTN) telederm service allows physicians and nurses to securely send dermatological referrals including pictures of the patient’s skin condition and relevant patient history to an Ontario based dermatologist.
How do I get a referral? A referral form is completed by the Family Physician. This form has a series of questions and once complete provides answers the dermatologists need, to help make recommendations for treatment.

What is the process? Once the referral is faxed it will be submitted into the store forward software by the nurse. The patient comes to the telehealth clinic gives a brief history and has photographs of the skin taken by the telehealth nurse. Once this is reviewed by the dermatologist a report is sent to referring site and the family physician. The family physician will contact the patient to initiate any treatment recommended.
